LibriVox is a private initiative concerned with the registration and publication of books that are in the public domain (expired copyright) and made freely available via their website.
The books are read by volunteers from all over the world, and anyone can volunteer as long as they have some basic recording equipment. A book can be read and recorded as a collaborative project where a group of readers read different sections or chapters, or one person may be responsible for recording an entire book.
The audio files are edited and then posted on the LibriVox website so that listeners can freely access them.
There are no restrictions on how the files are used and people can download them to their computers or even distribute them freely. LibriVox contains 14,409, and more than 140 books are added every month.
